Throughout our years of constructing greenhouses, we've learned that building the foundation of glass greenhouses below the frost line is essential. It’s not just about how deep the foundation is, but about ensuring the long-term stability and durability of the structure. Our experience has shown that if the foundation doesn't reach below the frost line, the greenhouse’s safety and stability could be compromised.
1. What Is the Frost Line?
The frost line refers to the depth at which the ground freezes during the winter. This depth varies depending on the region and climate. In winter, as the ground freezes, the water in the soil expands, causing the soil to rise (a phenomenon known as frost heave). As the temperature warms in the spring, the ice melts, and the soil contracts. Over time, this cycle of freezing and thawing can cause the foundation of buildings to shift. We've seen that if the greenhouse foundation is built above the frost line, the base will be lifted during winter and settle back down in spring, which can lead to structural damage over time, including cracks or broken glass.
2. The Importance of Foundation Stability
Glass greenhouses are much heavier and more complex than standard plastic-covered greenhouses. Besides their own weight, they also have to withstand additional forces such as wind and snow. In colder regions, winter snow accumulation can place significant stress on the structure. If the foundation is not deep enough, the greenhouse may become unstable under the pressure. From our projects in northern regions, we’ve observed that insufficiently deep foundations are more likely to fail under these conditions. To avoid this, the foundation must be placed below the frost line, ensuring stability under various weather conditions.
3. Preventing the Impact of Frost Heave
Frost heave is one of the most obvious risks to a shallow foundation. The freezing soil expands and pushes the foundation upward, and once it thaws, the structure settles unevenly. For glass greenhouses, this can result in stress on the frame or cause glass to break. To counter this, we always recommend that the foundation be built below the frost line, where the ground remains stable year-round.

Building below the frost line may increase initial construction costs, but it’s an investment that pays off in the long run. We often advise clients that shallow foundations can lead to significant repair costs down the road. With a properly designed deep foundation, greenhouses can remain stable through extreme weather, reducing the need for frequent repairs and improving cost-efficiency over time.
